Need Help Deciding? What kind of Makeup Artist do you want to be?

Photo of KayLeanna and Kat Flynt by J M PolsfussKat Flynt specializes in media makeup and wedding makeup and has written the Curriculum and PowerPoint Presentations for numerous courses within these two areas of expertise. If you have made the decision to pursue a career as a Freelance Makeup Artist then your next decision is to decide what type of makeup career you want to pursue. See the basic information about several different areas of expertise below:

  • Counter Makeup Artist: this requires only very basic skills qualifying you to demonstrate product application to a client at a makeup counter in a department store. This is a great entry level position to consider when starting out as a new makeup artist.
  • Wedding Makeup Artist: Bridal, wedding party, and special occasion makeup requires some advanced skill in corrective makeup, makeup for mature skin, and makeup for different skin tones and skin types. Makeup for weddings can be a very profitable business although usually limited to weekends.
  • Media Makeup Artist: requires great skill in corrective makeup that appears completely flawless for hi-definition as wells as the skills needed for working with all different skin tones and skin types. This makeup artist will provide makeup applications for commercial photography, fashion shows, magazines, television commercials, television appearances, video productions, industrial videos, infomercials, news programs, advertising, catalogues, newspapers, brochures, etc...
  • Theatrical/Stage Makeup Artist: requires advanced skills in character makeup. Stage makeup is used as a method in conjunction with stage lighting to highlight the actors' faces in order make expressions visible to the audience from further distances. This often includes defining the eyes and lips as well as the highlights and lowlights of the facial bones; while also creating looks for specific characters (such as old age makeup).
  • Prosthetics/Special Effects Makeup Artist (FX Makeup): The use of special effects makeup can be found mostly in the film industry and includes all blood and gore makeup techniques as well as the use of prosthetics. This area often becomes a much more complicated process as plaster casting and other crafts are needed to complete the makeup. To protect yourself from toxic fumes and chemicals you often need to wear gloves and masks. The demand for special effects makeup artists is shrinking due to so much of this work now being done with computer graphics.

If you chose Wedding or Media Makeup Artistry then you are in the right place. Kat Flynt has worked in the Atlanta market since 1993 where she has not seen a high demand for theatrical or special effects makeup artists. Kat has developed her skills based on the demand of the Atlanta area market and therefore specializes in media makeup and wedding makeup.
